Selena Gomez wasn’t expecting to give a SAG Award acceptance speech for Only Murders in the Building at tonight’s ceremony, but the SAG-AFTRA guild members had a surprise in store for her.
The show’s cast won Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series. Gomez’s co-stars Steve Martin and Martin Short skipped the event, leaving Gomez, Richard Kind, Molly Shannon, Michael Cyril Creighton, and Kumail Nanjiani as the only stars present to give the speech.
Gomez took the mic and didn’t even hide her shock. “Wait, we never win,” she began, exasperated. “This is so weird.” Then she made a joke and found her stride: “OK, well, Marty [Short] and Steve [Martin] aren’t here. You know, they don’t really care. But I just—I don’t know what to say.” Her co-star Richard Kind advised her to thank Short and Martin.
Gomez obliged, saying, “oh, and thank you to Marty and Steve. They raised me.” Then she thanked everyone else: “I genuinely am just so grateful. Everybody, the writers—everyone deserve this. I take it home for all of us and I’m bringing this back to New York for season 5. Thank you so much. I’m so grateful! Thank you, SAG-AFTRA. Thank you to everybody. I love you.”
Watch her sweet, off-the-cuff speech below. Her face was painted with pure shock when she learned they won:
Even backstage, Gomez was still flustered, telling photographers, “I’ve never won anything!” She and her co-stars then marveled over how heavy the statues were.
