The 2001 classic film Legally Blonde has many passionate fans and they may be finally getting their wish for more fulfilled. The movie’s star, Reese Witherspoon, and her Hello Sunshine company are reportedly developing a Legally Blonde spinoff TV series inspired by the original at Amazon MGM Studios, according to Deadline.
This is not the first time the story has been mined for more material: there was a sequel titled Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde in 2003 and a direct-to-video spinoff Legally Blondes, in 2009, which actually served as a pilot for a potential series back then. Mindy Kaling and Dan Goor have also been working on a Legally Blonde 3 for a number of years, too.
Here’s everything we know about the possible new show expanding on the world of Elle Woods so far.
What is the Legally Blonde spinoff about?
The show is supposed to be written by Gossip Girl developers and executive producers Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, which might mean a show with lots of drama, romance, twists, and turns if it’s anything like their former projects. Hopefully, it will also maintain the original’s comedic bent.
The pair have their own company, Fake Empire, and will be working alongside Witherspoon and her Hello Sunshine partner Lauren Neustadter, as well as producer Marc Platt. The premise is being kept quiet, but it seems like it might be expansive—a source told Deadline they might “further expand the Legally Blonde TV universe with a potential second spinoff series, which is still in preliminary, idea stages.”
Who is in the cast of the Legally Blonde spinoff?
While Witherspoon might be too busy for a full return as her character Elle, it wouldn’t be surprising if she at the very least made a cameo. There are plenty of other former cast members who fans would welcome on screen, including Elle’s love interest played by Luke Wilson, and her bestie at the nail salon, portrayed by the hilarious Jennifer Coolidge.
Has production begun on the Legally Blonde spinoff?
The potential show is still in development, but this story will be updated as things unfold.
