The Yellowstone prequel 1883 is moving on to the Paramount network after its streaming first season was released on Paramount+ last year. The popular show ended with what felt like a closed story, but viewers were promised a second season. Instead, they may eventually get yet more episodes of popular spin-off 1923, and a number of featurettes at the end of each episode as it airs on cable. Here’s when to watch. Some spoilers ahead!

What is 1883 about?

The show stars Sam Elliott, Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, Billy Bob Thornton, Isabel May, LaMonica Garrett, Marc Rissmann, Audie Rick, Eric Nelsen, and James Landry Hébert. It follows the famous Dutton family as they first move west and start taking over through their expansion into Montana.

But the season ended with the death of narrator Elsa Dutton, played by May, and the wagon train leader Shea Brennan (Sam Elliott). The wagon train also suffered some fatal hits.

Creator and writer Taylor Sheridan told Deadline, “We wanted to make a 10-hour movie that ended, and that’s what we did… For me, as a storyteller it feels close ended. I’m going to peek through the window of a different era and see what I see then.”

Will there be a second season of 1883?

Yes and no. In a confusing twist, 1923 was the next era of the Dutton family put on screen, covering their life during the Great Depression and starring Helen Mirren and Harrison Ford. It began airing in December of 2022 and was renewed for eight episodes in February of this year.

Meanwhile, Sheridan’s is working on another project with David Oyelowo initially titled 1883: Bass Reeves about the US Marshal. It’s now called Lawmen: Bass Reeves, so 1883 may have nothing to do with it.

There is currently a writer’s strike, so much might change by the time everyone can work on new episodes or even an entirely new series.

When do episodes of 1883 air on the Paramount network?

The series begins showing on Sunday, June 18, at 8 pm EST, and the featurettes will follow immediately after. There are ten episodes, so 1883 will presumably be airing every Sunday at the same time for the next couple of months, but you can check your local TV schedule to be sure. They’re also still available to subscribers of Paramount + who want to binge the series right now.
