Although the end of Stranger Things as we know it is rapidly approaching, Stranger Things the franchise is only just heating up. Like Game of Thrones and countless mega-IP institutions before it, the scifi/horror series is capitalizing on a hungry audience and a streamer eager to boost its numbers. Brothers Matt and Ross Duffer, whose brainchild has become one of Netflix’s biggest hits, confirmed a spinoff of the series is on its way—but you needn’t worry about a glut of repetitive content, the brothers swear. The spinoff will, of course, be something “very different.” Here’s what little we know so far.
What will the Stranger Things spinoff be about?
Probably not Eleven or her pals! As the Duffers told Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast when Stranger Things season 4 hit Netflix, “I’ve read these rumors that there’s gonna be an Eleven spinoff, that there’s gonna be a Steve and Dustin spinoff, or that it’s another number [from Dr. Brenner’s lab]. That’s not interesting to me because we’ve done all that. We’ve spent I don’t know how many hours exploring all of that. So it’s very different.”
They later added, “The most important connective tissue I would say is the storytelling sensibility of it. There is story that connects to the Stranger Things world, but it really is more about how we’re telling that story.” To further clarify, they said the spinoff will be “1000% different” from the OG series.
That impeccably vague description doesn’t give us much to go on, but again—sounds like that “connective tissue” will likely be an appearance from the Upside Down. So far, Finn Wolfhard is reportedly the only person who’s figured it out.
What will it be called?
No clues yet. Maybe Stranger Things: Dawn of the Demogorgon? Stranger Things 1984? Into the Stranger-Verse?
Who will be in the cast?
Don’t expect too many familiar faces, either in front of or behind the camera. The Duffers have confirmed they’ll be involved with the spinoff, but not as intimately as with the flagship show. “Hopefully we find that right person to pass the baton to while we go on to do new stuff,” they told Horowitz.
Actors from the original series, including Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, David Harbour, Sadie Sink, and Winona Ryder might make cameo appearances in the spinoff, but it seems unlikely they’ll land lead or recurring roles. They’ve got other projects to headline!
When is the release date?
No release date is yet set, and considering Stranger Things season 5 is still a long ways off, a spinoff is likely multiple years in the future. That gives us plenty of time to brainstorm a catchier name than 2 Strange 2 Survive.
