Keri Russell’s disheveled diplomat Kate Wyler has some big shoes she’s about to (be forced to) fill. After season 2 of Netflix’s political drama The Diplomat ended on a huge twist, the series is barreling toward a third chapter—one with major implications for Kate’s career, widening the target already strapped to her back. Here’s what we know so far about the series’ third season, which Netflix confirmed prior to season 2’s release.

Will there be a season 3 of the The Diplomat?

Yes. Before season 2 hit screens in October 2024, Netflix shared the news that The Diplomat would receive a season 3—and that, in fact, production was already underway in London and New York City.

“After an amazing summer shooting in the UK, we brought London home to NY,” said series creator Debora Cahn in a statement. “Best of both worlds—filming in Brooklyn. We love doing this. We’re so excited to get to keep going.”

Who will be in the cast?

Expect many of the main players to return, including Russell as Kate, Rufus Sewell as Kate’s ambassador husband Hal Wyler, Allison Janney as U.S. Vice President Grace Penn, David Gyasi as British Foreign Secretary Austin Dennison, Ali Ahn as London CIA Chief Eidra Park, Rory Kinnear as Prime Minister Nicol Trowbridge, and Ato Essandoh as Deputy Chief of Mission Stuart Hayford.

Netflix also announced that Bradley Whitford is joining the cast as Todd Penn, Grace Penn’s husband, marking a West Wing reunion for him and Janney.

What will season 3 be about?

I’ll avoid specific spoilers here until season 2 has been out for a bit, but as Cahn herself told Netflix’s Tudum, “Season 3 flips the chessboard. In season 3, Kate lives the particular nightmare that is getting what you want.” Ominous indeed.

When will The Diplomat season 3 come out?

The Diplomat will return in 2025, though the exact date is to be announced.

Season 1 debuted in April 2023, with season 2 following in October 2024. The WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes lasted throughout much of summer 2023, which delayed filming for season 2. Given that season 3 is already in the midst of production and (hopefully) will not experience similar delays, it seems possible the third chapter could drop as early as mid-to-late 2025. But, for now, that’s purely speculation.

Is there a trailer?

Not yet, but on January 30, Netflix shared first-look photos of season 3, including images of Whitford joining the cast.
