Netflix’s limited series American Primeval breathed new life into the Western genre with its extremely brutal portrayal of life in the mid-1800s amidst colonization, war, and family drama. Written by The Revenant’s Mark L. Smith and directed and executive produced by Peter Berg, the show quickly became popular, but it only ran for six episodes.
Viewers want to know if there might be more to the story coming in a second season. Here’s what we know about the possibility so far. Spoilers ahead.
What would season 2 of American Primeval be about?
The show opens in the American West in the year 1857. Sara is trying to reunite her son, Devin, with his father, but she is being hounded by bounty hunters as she heads to the frontier. Meanwhile, the territory is in violent dispute between the Indigenous tribes, Mormon colonists, and the American Government. Sara is accompanied by Two Moons, who is leading the mother and son to Crooks Springs, where her husband is supposedly looking for gold.
The group narrowly escapes death after getting caught up in the Mountain Meadows Massacre, a real historical event where Brigham Young’s Mormon militia group dressed as natives and attacked a group of immigrants. They are then connected to Isaac, a long-time resident of the territory, who urges them to return east. It doesn’t work, and the quartet are bound together in their effort to survive.
Through their complicated journey, Sarah and Isaac develop feelings for one another, but he ultimately dies protecting her from bounty hunters. She, Devin, and Two Moons decide to head to California.
While the series could continue with Sara or pick up with any of the other side characters established in the first season, the compelling love story has come to a close.
Who would be in season 2 of American Primeval?
If the show continued with Sara, star Betty Gilpin could return without Taylor Kitsch’s Isaac. So could Preston Mota as Devin and Shawnee Pourier as Two Moons. Whether or not any of the other surviving characters would return depends on who the second season focused on.
Will there be a second season of American Primeval on Netflix?
Right now, it looks like no. The first season was produced as a “limited series,” meaning it was meant to only be one season. However, other series originally designated as “limited” were picked up again by the streaming service in the past.
But many of the characters viewers got attached to in American Primeval end the first season deceased. A potential option is exploring the same time period with other characters in a different location. There has been no announcement of any intention to do this, though, so best to enjoy the series to the fullest as it is.
