Joker: Folie à Deux finally tap-danced its way into theaters. The Joker sequel, which has been in the works since 2022, stars Lady Gaga as Lee, a.k.a. Harley Quinn, while Joaquin Phoenix reprises his role as Arthur Fleck. Todd Phillips also returns as director.
The film follows Lee and Arthur after they meet at Arkham State Hospital, a psychiatric institute. Arthur is there as a prisoner, awaiting a trial for murder, and Lee is an Arkham patient, according to The Hollywood Reporter. As the two meet in music group therapy at the hospital, it doesn’t take long for them to fall for each other—in a rather musical fashion. The film includes 15 covers and original songs, according to Variety, including “For Once in My Life” and “If My Friends Could See Me Now.” So be prepared to see these classic comic book villains breaking out into song and dance.
Gaga was so touched by her experience filming that she released a new album, Harlequin, inspired by the songs in the film. So if you’ve been hoping for some new Lady Gaga music ahead of her next album, here’s a welcome surprise.
“I kind of had this like this, this deep experience with the character and she just didn’t really leave me creatively and I decided I wanted to make a whole album inspired by her,” Gaga told Apple Music 1 of the album and playing Lee. “She’s like a really complex woman.” As for Lee’s relationship with Joker, Gaga explains, “These two people find love in this really dark place and it brings them all the light.”
