Fans of Dune, get excited: the much anticipated prequel series is set to premiere this weekend. Dune: Prophecy promises to take the audience back into the universe Frank Herbert’s sci-fi epic, this time set thousands of years, 10,000 to be exact, before the events in his book and Denis Villeneuve’s movies. The show also has literary origins, taking inspiration from Sisterhood of Dune by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson.
In the series, we meet two sisters from the Harkonnen family who create and lead a group of women with special abilities called Bene Gesserit. They’ll have to “combat forces that threaten the future of humankind, and establish the fabled sect” One of those sisters is Valya, played by actress Emily Watson.
Speaking with Variety, Watson reflected on how this role differs from her previous work. “Valya is really strong, driven, kind of manipulative, and very smart and clever,” she said. “She is always one step ahead. But she’s good at letting other people think they are the ones pulling the strings when she’s controlling the narrative. It’s kind of a dark art that she practices.” Watson is joined by Olivia Williams as Tula, as the other half of their sister duo. Beyond them, the show features a large ensemble that includes new Bridgerton lead, Yerin Ha.
With so much fanfare surrounding Dune, the prequel series is sure to create some new loyal fans. To find out when new episodes will air, read on.
