Anna Kendrick’s Complete Dating History

As Anna Kendrick’s star has risen, so has her commitment to keeping her private life private. The actress feels very strongly about her romantic partnerships being off-limits, at least when it comes to the specifics.

She is willing to share more general thoughts about love and her experiences with dating, however. In May 2020, while promoting her HBO Max series Love Life, she told The Sydney Morning Herald that she believed the series showed “how we learn from each relationship,” which made her think about her own past.

“Looking back now, it’s like, ‘Oh god, I acted like such a jerk in that relationship.’ Or all the times I didn’t feel strong enough to say, ‘You can’t speak to me that way,’” she said. “I’m just so happy that I’m clearer now about what I will accept from people in my life.”

Here’s what is known about Anna Kendrick’s very private dating history.

Kendrick worked with English filmmaker Edgar Wright on Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. Kendrick played the titular character’s sister, Stacey Pilgrim, under Wright’s direction. In February 2023, she told Vanity Fair that she was a fan of Wright’s other films Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz and really wanted to work with him. They began dating soon after meeting in 2009.

The couple tried to keep their relationship as private as possible. In May 2012, she told The Guardian that paparazzi photos of them together were extremely upsetting.

“I started crying immediately. It was like someone emailing a picture of you sleeping,” she said. “It felt scary and dangerous. It still does.”

The pair dated for five years before splitting in 2013. In March of that year, a source told Us Weekly, “She’s single. It was done a little while ago.”

They seem to have remained friends and worked together again in 2023 on Netflix’s animated series Scott Pilgrim Takes Off.

Kendrick worked on the film Drinking Buddies with cinematographer Ben Richardson in 2012, though it’s believed they did not start dating until 2014. In 2015, there were rumors the pair were engaged when Kendrick was photographed wearing a large ring. In an interview with Marie Claire that same year, she denied there was an engagement.

“No, it’s not even a diamond ring!” she insisted. “[It’s] costume jewelry!”

The couple were together until around 2019, which Entertainment Tonight reported was the last time they were photographed together.

Kendrick and Saturday Night Live alum Bill Hader began dating in late 2020. They had likely crossed paths many years earlier, but were thrown together on set for the 2019 film Noelle, where they were cast as brother and sister. In January 2022, a source told People, “Anna has been dating Bill quietly for over a year…They are both very private people, and with the pandemic, it was easy to keep it quiet. They’re both hysterical so they must keep each other laughing all of the time. She’s really, really happy.”

In March of that year, a source told ET, “Bill and Anna are in love and very happy in their relationship, and enjoying their time together.”

That same month, Hader told The Hollywood Reporter that he doesn’t discuss his romantic relationships for the sake of his kids.

“They just want me to be their dad,” he explained. “They just want me to sit and watch Encanto over and over and over again. So that’s what I do.”

In June 2022, Entertainment Tonight reported the couple had split up.
