Deadpool & Wolverine has arrived to lure fans back into the grasp of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The highly-anticipated superhero summer blockbuster aspires to breath life back into the behemoth film franchise; it’s a film so anticipated even Taylor Swift is posting about it. Could this be the elixir needed for Marvel’s rebound?
Since Disney bought 20th Century Fox—the former rights-holder of superhero IP including Deadpool himself—in 2019, fans have been abuzz wondering what’s in store for their beloved “Merc with a Mouth,” Ryan Reynolds’ Wade Wilson. (It was difficult to imagine Deadpool shaving down his vocabulary to non-expletives to conform to the traditionally PG-13 landscape of the MCU.) And what about Hugh Jackman’s Logan, who was last seen falling to the fatal hands of his clone X-24 in Logan (2017)? How is it possible that these two characters’ paths will converge?
May audiences be reminded that, in the multiverse introduced by Marvel’s Doctor Strange (2016), anything is possible. Stars and off-screen friends Reynolds and Jackman have joined forces for an epic action comedy-bromance at the hands of director Shawn Levy (Night at the Museum, All the Light We Cannot See). Together, this dream team pioneers the first-ever R-rated MCU movie, which could break Joker’s record as the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time, per Deadline. We’re in for a wild ride.
What is Deadpool & Wolverine about?
The film takes place a few years into Wade Wilson’s (Reynolds) retirement from his Deadpool shenanigans after the events that took place in Deadpool 2 (2018). All seems right in Wade’s life until he is suddenly confronted by Paradox (Matthew McFayden), the TVA (Time Variance Authority) agent who explains to him that the world as he knows it is on the verge of collapse—and that the fate of a certain other “Wolverine” (Jackman) is the responsible “anchor being” causing this major disruption in Wade’s life. Deadpool finds himself begrudgingly reality-hopping through timelines, across all of which he must succumb to the wrath of this Wolverine himself in profanity-slingshotting, banter-smeared battles. The two finally realize that their fates are inextricably linked, and that they have no choice but to work together to fight off common enemy Cassandra Nova (Emma Corrin).
How can you stream Deadpool & Wolverine?
At the moment, Deadpool & Wolverine is only available to watch in theaters. Although no official streaming date has been confirmed yet, a report by Tech Radar noted that most Marvel release schedules have stuck to a fairly consistent streaming schedule since the release of Black Panther 2 (2022). If that schedule holds, fans can expect Deadpool & Wolverine to become available on Disney+ sometime this fall.
