If you’re a fan of 1996’s Twister starring Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton, listen up. Hit Man’s Glen Powell, Daisy Edgar-Jones of Where the Crawdads Sing, and In the Heights star Anthony Ramos have come together to bring a follow-up film to life.
In the new Twisters, Kate Carter (Edgar-Jones) has retired from storm chasing following a traumatizing experience with a tornado when she was in college. She has since moved to New York City, where she safely studies storms from a computer screen instead of heading straight into the belly of the beast. However, her old friend Javi (Ramos) manages to persuade her to return to Oklahoma to test some new storm tracking technology. While back in town, she butts heads with Tyler Owens (Powell), an influencer known for posting his storm-chasing experiences on YouTube. Together, the three of them find themselves caught in the path of multiple tornados in the deadliest series of natural disasters ever seen.
“The original Twister, when it came out, it meant a great deal to me because I was watching a film that took place around where I grew up,” director Lee Isaac Chung said in an inside-look video posted by Universal Pictures. “I grew up on a farm just outside of Westville, Oklahoma, and that terrain—that landscape is a part of me.”
“The fact that we’re getting to shoot this in Oklahoma is really crucial,” Powell chimed in. “And also, it’s such a character in the movie. It’s all about community, it’s all about home, and it’s all about this mutual love of the way everyone looks up at the sky with reverence and awe.”
Chung concluded, “This is a film about science, it’s about hope, it’s about people trying to work together to solve problems, and it’s also about revering and honoring, respecting, and loving nature.”
As Twisters finally hits theaters this weekend, ahead is how to stream it from home.
How can you stream Twisters?
With a theatrical release date of July 19, Twisters will first storm into cinemas, but it’ll eventually end up on the streaming platform Peacock so that fans can watch the film from home. However, its exact streaming date is still unknown, so for now you’ll have to watch Twisters at the movies.
In the meantime, the original Twister is available on Max.
