Nina Dobrev and Boyfriend Shaun White’s Complete Relationship Timeline

A lot has changed since Nina Dobrev first starred on The Vampire Diaries alongside Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley. Professionally, she has expanded her repertoire, appearing in movies such as The Out-Laws, Let’s Be Cops, and Love Hard.

And romantically, she has had a series of high-profile relationships, including romances with Ian Somerhalder and Glen Powell. She was even rumored to date Liam Hemsworth.

Dobrev’s latest love story though is with someone whose biggest claim to fame is the slopes rather than the studio lot. In 2019, Dobrev began dating Shaun White, a five-time Olympian snowboarder and actor. The couple, who has been together for five years, still seem as smitten as they were on day one.

Get to know their history below.

The couple first met at a motivational workshop in Florida put together by Tony Robbins. Following the event, Dobrev and White went out for dinner. That was when White discovered just how famous Dobrev was.

In a People interview published on Jan. 12, 2022, White explained that when he first met the actress, “I actually didn’t know anything about her.” They went to a restaurant post-event, and he remembered the staff asking, “‘Can we get a photo…with her?’ And I was like, ‘What’s happening? What’s going on?’ It was actually really funny.”

In late February 2020, Dobrev and White posted separate Instagram pictures from the same location. The posts sparked dating rumors.

Rumors of their relationship heightened as the world began to quarantine during the COVID-19 pandemic. The couple was photographed biking through Malibu, and White carried Dobrev’s dog Maverick.

White and Dobrev made their relationship Instagram official on April 18 when they shared a video featuring Dobrev washing her groceries with White’s hands. Fans instantly recognized his tattoo.

The post was similar to Dakota Johnson’s when she posted a sly video with longtime partner Chris Martin on Instagram.

Dobrev and White celebrated their first Valentine’s Day publicly. Dobrev shared an Instagram with the caption, “my favorite snow cone flavor is White. happy we got ‘stuck together’ last year and stuck it out 😉 happy valentine’s day to my quarantini in crime… 🤍”

Due to the ongoing quarantine, the couple’s options to celebrate their first anniversary were limited, but White got creative. He told Us Weekly on June 12, 2021, “I wanted to recreate our first date, but everything was closed…I managed to sweet-talk the owner of the place to open up for us. It was actually pretty fun to have a place all to ourselves.”

For their second big trip together, the couple went snowboarding on Jan. 19, 2022.

Dobrev shared details with People on Jan. 26, 2022 of how she surprised White during the vacation. “I think [White] was more surprised when we went [snowboarding] for the first time,” she began “He was expecting to wait for me, and it was quite the opposite. I had already passed him by a landslide…I can keep up!”

The couple made their red carpet debut at the premiere of Top Gun: Maverick in London on May 19, 2022.

Dobrev and White attended The Out-Laws premiere in L.A. Dobrev wore an asymmetric Khaite minidress, while the Olympian wore a suit.

In an interview on July 4, 2023 with E!, Dobrev shared how White assisted her with the project: “Shaun helped me run lines for my audition.”

The couple attended an event for the Clooney Foundation for Justice in matching all-black outfits.

The actress reflected on the night in an Instagram post. She shared, “An immensely important evening to shine a protective light on the many courageous individuals who, at great personal risk, have devoted their lives to justice. Thank you George and Amal Clooney for a beautiful evening, and to all the honorees for dedicating your lives in the pursuit of justice. The world is a better place because of you.”

In an interview with People on Jan. 18, 2024, Dobrev opened up about how she and White keep their relationship going strong.

“In general, I’m more of a planner in life,” she said. “Yeah, I like a schedule, and I like a plan for sure. I’m a Capricorn so that’s very much part of my personality.” She added the implemented a “date night every week, and we alternate [planning]. So one week I’ll plan it, and he won’t have any idea what we’re doing so it’s a surprise for him. And then the following week, he’ll plan, and it’ll be a complete surprise for me. And we do that every single week.”

In an interview with E! on May 18, 2024, White discussed Dobrev’s impressive snowboarding skills “She’s really good on the board. She grew up in Canada. So it was nice ’cause that’s definitely sometimes a relationship make-or-break. Not if they can’t ride, but I’ve had people come up with me, and it didn’t end well ’cause I’m not the best coach at times.”

White also revealed that one of the things he loves most is “to have a partner that loves the mountains and is adventurous.”
