Update, May 30: Paul Mescal and Daisy Edgar-Jones have finally revealed their secret project: The actors are hosting a raffle for a marathon screening of Normal People that will benefit the charities Pieta, which supports suicide prevention, and UNICEF. The duo will be in attendance for the 12-episode event, along with director Lenny Abrahamson and producer Ed Guiney, at a Central London theater on Sunday, June 16. There will be a Q&A after the last episode moderated by a “special guest” according to the event description. (Do we think it’s Sally Rooney herself?) The actors also shared that they have “never seen [the show] on a big screen together and we would love to see as many of you there as possible!”

In a video posted today, Mescal and Edgar-Jones apologized for leading fans to believe they were about to announce a season 2 renewal of Normal People. It’s not happening, sadly, or at least “not yet,” Edgar-Jones clarified optimistically. There’s “still time” for that, so “keep the faith,” she advised.

Original story: If you, like me, have saved a special place in your heart for Paul Mescal and Daisy Edgar-Jones ever since watching Normal People, listen up. The co-stars and IRL friends have some news… we just don’t know what it is.

Yesterday, Edgar-Jones took to her Instagram Story to tease that she and Mescal “have news to share,” but they’ve yet to reveal what. All we know is that we should “watch this space,” i.e. her Instagram, for updates. In the meantime, we can relish in this adorable selfie she posted with the almost-announcement.

Still, the teaser was enough to leave fans on the edge of their seats, and rightfully so. The pair has become an object of obsession, not only for their career-defining performances in Normal People (and their other buzzy projects since) but also for their sweet real-life friendship. Are they dating? Probably not. (Let the fans dream.) Do I still get giddy every time they’re photographed together? I’m practically kicking my feet like a little girl at the foot of her bed.

Look at their smiles! The peace signs! How happy they look!!!

Whatever it is they’re announcing, they sure seem to be excited about it. While we await the news, we took a couple of guesses as to what the actors might have up their sleeves, ranging from likely possibilities to complete long shots. Here are our theories:

They’re announcing Normal People season 2.

The first season covered the entirety of Rooney’s novel, but who knows? Perhaps the writers have ideas for Marianne and Connell’s future.

They were cast in Knives Out 3.

Andrew Scott, Josh O’Connor, and Cailee Spaeny are officially part of the cast of Hot Stars™ in the next round of the murder mystery franchise. Might Daisy and Paul be the next additions?

Edgar-Jones was cast in the Merrily We Roll Along film.

Mescal is starring in the Richard Linklater film with Beanie Feldstein and Ben Platt, which will be shot over several years and is already in production. Do we think Daisy is joining in a minor role? Evelyn or Beth perhaps?

Marriage???

Just kidding, just kidding. Unless…?

They’re starring in another version of Romeo & Juliet coming to Broadway this fall.

Watch out, Rachel Zegler and Kit Connor.

They’re the new Mr. and Mrs. Smith.

The series has been renewed for a second season, but it’s unclear whether Donald Glover and Maya Erskine will return in their roles. If the show goes the anthology route, might we suggest a soft, sensitive John and Jane?

They’re going to lead a new Sally Rooney film adaptation.

Maybe Beautiful World, Where Are You? Or are there early rights for her upcoming book, Intermezzo?

They’re going to lead an Emily Henry film adaptation.

Fans were rooting for Mescal to star opposite Ayo Edebiri in the film version of Beach Read. But what about People We Meet on Vacation?

Or make it a love triangle: They’re starring in a Challengers sequel with Ayo.

Luca Guadagnino, pick up the phone right now.

They’re launching a line of short shorts.

Paul is already well-versed in this subject.

They’re launching a podcast.

Would listen.

Nothing actually, it was all a big joke.

Please. Please don’t do this to us.
