Everything We Know About The Idea of You Starring Anne Hathaway and Nicholas Galitzine

Things are heating up for Anne Hathaway and Red, White, and Royal Blue star Nicholas Galitzine in their upcoming romance film, The Idea of You. Plans for the production were first revealed way back in December 2018, with the casting announced years later in 2022.

By October that year, filming was in full swing, and E! News obtained a behind-the-scenes photo of Hathaway and Galitzine kissing in the rain, giving fans a sneak peak of what’s to come.

In December 2022, The Idea of You wrapped up filming, as Galitzine documented with an Instagram post.

“Well, that’s a wrap on The Idea of You!” he wrote in the caption, sharing a carousel of selfies and silly moments with the cast and crew. “10 photos is not nearly enough to include all the incredible people who made this project as special as it was. And unfortunately I can’t share half the photos or I’ll spoil our story. To my wonderful crew, I can’t thank you enough for the beautiful experience I had on this job. Love you.”

What is The Idea of You about?

The Idea of You is a steamy film based on a novel of the same title by Robinne Lee. The book follows 40-year-old Solène (Hathaway), an art gallery owner in Los Angeles. After taking her daughter, Isabelle, to Coachella to see her favorite boy band, August Moon, everything changes for Solène when she meets 24-year-old Hayes Campbell (Galitzine), a singer in the band.

They hit it off and then must figure out how to navigate their passionate relationship after it hits the public eye, and Solène, Hayes, and even Isabelle become the target of jealous fans and media outlets.

When does it come out, and where can I watch it?

The Idea of You debuted at SXSW Film Festival on March 16, 2024. It will officially release on Prime Video on May 2, 2024.

Yes! On March, 6, 2024, Prime Video dropped the official trailer for The Idea of You.

Is The Idea of You actually based on Harry Styles fan fiction?

When the book originally went viral, the internet immediately began speculating that it was essentially a fan-fiction-turned-novel, and the character Hayes was rumored to be based on Harry Styles. Not only do they both have ‘H’ names, they also are both British, tatted singers in boy bands. Not to mention, Styles does have a small history of dating older women.

While Lee did tell Vogue in 2020 that aspects of Hayes were inspired by the Watermelon Sugar singer, she just created her “dream guy,” which is a mix of “Prince Harry meets Harry [Styles]” with a little sprinkle of Eddie Redmayne. But despite all that, Lee said, “This was never supposed to be a book about Harry Styles. It was supposed to be a story about a woman approaching 40 and reclaiming her sexuality and rediscovering herself, just at the point that society traditionally writes women off as desirable and viable and whole.”

Who’s in the cast?

Hathaway stars as the leading lady, Solène Marchand. Red, White, and Royal Blue actor Galitzine will be playing her boy band boyfriend, Hayes Campbell. Ella Rubin is Solène’s teenage daughter, Isabelle. Other cast members include Annie Mumulo, Reid Scott, and Perry Mattfeld.
