Everyone is watching Shōgun—or at least it feels like it. The new limited series has been breaking streaming records since it premiered on FX and Hulu in February, even outpacing The Bear. The first episode earned 9 million streaming views globally, marking the best debut for a Disney title (outside of franchises like Marvel, Star Wars, Pixar, National Geographic), according to The Hollywood Reporter. Anyone who’s watched knows the hype is well-earned.

Based on James Clavell’s 1975 historical novel of the same name, the thrilling series is set in feudal Japan as a council of warlords vie for power. While the book and 1980 mini series mainly focused on the character of John Blackthorne, an English pilot who ends up in the crosshairs of their political struggle, this adaptation centers a Japanese point of view. Japanese screen legend Hiroyuki Sanada (John Wick) stars as Lord Yoshii Toranaga, and also executive produces the series (co-created by Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo), which is rich in cultural tradition and meticulously researched.

“All the detail is so important to introduce our culture correctly,” Sanada told Variety. “The words, movement, position of the teacup, position of the sword—every movement or every detail changes a lot.”

On top of the show’s authenticity, Shōgun is a thrill to watch; the sword-wielding combat scenes are just as exhilarating as the razor-sharp dialogue. The cast also includes Anna Sawai, Cosmo Jarvis, Tadanobu Asano, Hiroto Kanai, Takehiro Hira, Moeka Hoshi, Tokuma Nishioka, Shinnosuke Abe, and more.

The Shōgun momentum keeps on going, too. In a rare move, the series topped Samba TV and The Wrap’s streaming chart for the second week in a row, besting Netflix hits like Love Is Blind. If you’re one of the masses enjoying Shōgun, or you think it’s time to become part of it, here’s when to catch new episodes.
