When Selena Gomez started Rare Beauty three years ago, the focus was makeup, but now she is expanding her brand by delving into a new category: body care. The Find Comfort Body Collection launches on Sephora and Rare Beauty’s sites on December 19 (but keen shoppers can grab it before; more on that below).
As Gomez tells ELLE.com over e-mail, expanding had always been the plan: “Deciding to move into body care with the Find Comfort Body Collection was a thoughtful choice for us and something I knew I wanted to do from the start but only when the timing was right,” she says. “We wanted to offer a well-rounded experience, so we started with four key products: hand cream, body lotion, body and hair mist, and an aromatherapy pen. Each product took a different amount of time to develop, making sure they truly represented our brand and delivered a sensory experience in line with the collection’s theme. For us, self-comfort aligns with self-acceptance and feeling good in your own skin without the need for perfect routines. It’s those small moments of comfort that matter and can be different for everyone.”
Gomez spoke more to ELLE.com about taking the jump into a new space, what’s next for the brand, and her go-to beauty look for the holidays. But before diving in, get to know each of the four products and Gomez’s thoughts behind them.
The Body and Hair Mist
The body and hair mist ($28) is designed to give hair shine and to just overall de-stress your body aromatically. It is infused with biotin, niacinamide, and peach flower extract with fragrance notes of lemon zest, jasmine, and cashmere wood. “I’ve always been drawn to fragrance because it helps me disconnect from everyday stresses, and this mist does just that,” Gomez explains. “It’s bright and fresh yet warm and cozy at the same time—I’m obsessed!”
The Hydrating Body Lotion
The hydrating body lotion ($28) is lightweight, non-greasy, and infused with vitamins and antioxidants like niacinamide, peach flower extract, and ashwagandha extract—a natural de-stressor. It keeps skin nourished and hydrated for up to 24 hours. “I love how this body lotion hugs your skin in hydration and softness all day,” Gomez says. “It has a light, refreshing scent that just makes you feel good.”
The Hydrating Hand Cream
The hydrating hand cream ($18) has a similar blend of vitamins and antioxidants to the body lotion. It absorbs quickly to restore moisture to hands and is designed to continue delivering hydration even after hand washing. “I’m obsessed with this hand cream because it’s rich yet never greasy, and the scent makes me feel calm and relaxed. I also love that it opens in just one twist—you never have to worry about losing the cap,” Gomez says.
The Aromatherapy Pen
The aromatherapy pen ($20) is a fast-absorbing gel with a natural blend of peppermint, lavender, and tonka bean aromatherapy oils that are designed to help de-stress and decompress your body. It is designed to be super portable, so you can use it whenever you need it. “I feel my best when I have at least an hour a day to decompress, but I know that’s not always realistic,” Gomez admits. “That’s why I created this aromatherapy pen—it’s a quick and easy way to help you find a moment of comfort whenever you need it.”
The Mist and Creams’ Fragrance Notes
Top: lemon zest, rhubarb, pomelo
Mid: jasmine petals, violet, black tea extract
Dry: vetiver, tonka beans, cashmere wood
All products are 100 percent cruelty-free, vegan, paraben-free, and dermatologist-tested.
Here, Gomez discusses the collection more in detail with ELLE:
What surprised you about the process of developing the Find Comfort Collection and getting into the world of fragrance? How did you make the final call on what you wanted each of these products to smell like?
When it came to the Find Comfort fragrance, I knew I wanted a warm and inviting vibe. We worked with the perfumer who focused on vetiver to make it stand out and appeal to everyone. It gives the scent a green, earthy, slightly smoky feel. The tonka bean was our choice to add warmth, comfort, and a cozy, hug-like touch.
This is Rare Beauty’s first time going beyond makeup in its offerings. How has expanding the brand into this new space changed your overall vision for it? Could you see Rare exploring other spaces in body care (skin care, hair care, etc.) someday?
Stepping into body care is a major move for Rare Beauty, and it brings exciting opportunities. We’re dedicated to evolving and doing the unexpected.
Rare Beauty is now three years old—and bigger than ever. I know you mentioned being afraid that it wasn’t going to sell when you first launched it. How has the journey of this brand (and its success) changed the way you see yourself as a leader and businesswoman?
The last three years with Rare Beauty have been amazing, and it’s changed how I see myself as a businesswoman. Don’t get me wrong, I’m still learning and will continue to learn but I’ve gained more confidence in making business decisions, leading a team, and tackling challenges.
On the subject of fragrance, what scent do you associate this chapter of your life with and why?
This time in my life is all about the scents from the Find Comfort Body Collection. We put a lot of time and energy into creating the fragrance, and I think it will always remind me of this special period. The hand cream, body lotion, and mist have uplifting notes of lemon zest, soft jasmine, along with warmer notes of vetiver and tonka bean. It’s a bright, calm, welcoming scent.
What do you love most about the holiday season? What is your go-to holiday party look?
Spending more time with friends and family, eating decadent food. The quality time is unmatched. I don’t really have a go-to, but I guess you can never go wrong with something sparkly with a bold lip.
The Find Comfort Body Collection will be available for purchase on RareBeauty.com and Sephora.com on December 19 and in Sephora stores on December 26. You can get a sneak peek at the products and join the waitlist for them on Rare Beauty’s site here today.
Early shoppers can buy them on Sephora’s app on December 18, one day before they hit the site.
