Just when all hope seemed lost, Rachel Zegler got her last-minute miracle: an invitation to the 2022 Oscars. The West Side Story actress revealed on Sunday, March 20—one week before the Academy Awards—that she was “not invited” and would therefore be wearing “sweatpants and my boyfriend’s flannel,” as opposed to the sheer black gown she ended up wearing to the ceremony.
“I hope some last minute miracle occurs and I can celebrate our film in person,” she said on Instagram. “But hey, that’s how it goes sometimes, I guess.” At the time, she was in London filming Snow White, which could have contributed to the missing invitation.
But after a media and fan uproar in response to the apparent snub, the Academy Awards extended an offer for Zegler to attend as a presenter. According to the New York Times, Disney rearranged the production schedule on Snow White to make the occasion possible. On March 27, she drifted onto the red carpet in custom Christian Dior Haute Couture, celebrating alongside West Side Story actors including Ariana Debose and Paloma Garcia-Lee.
