Turns out it wasn’t just coffee. After actor Jacob Elordi was photographed sharing an afternoon cup of joe in Los Angeles with YouTuber Olivia Jade Giannulli, daughter of Lori Laughlin, rumors spread immediately that the two might be kindling a quiet relationship. A source confirmed the reports on Dec. 21, in an interview with People: “Olivia and Jacob are casually dating.”
Only last month did Elordi split from model Kaia Gerber, with whom he shared a relationship of over a year. Although the two are no longer romantically connected, it seems the split was amicable, as he praised her in a recent Men’s Health cover story: “[Kaia] handles herself wonderfully publicly. And I’ve learned so much from her about how to handle it, how to deal with it and just kind of be whatever about it, you know?”
Giannulli herself ended a relationship with boyfriend Jackson Guthy back in August. However, the People insider claims the two are still in regular contact, and that they might get back together even as she explores a romance with Elordi. “Olivia is happy, but she and Jackson still talk often,” the source said. “It wouldn’t be a surprise for anyone to see them get back together.”
Guthy and Giannulli broke up once before, in 2019, after Giannulli’s parents, Laughlin and Mossimo Giannulli, became mired in the college admissions scandal known as “Operation Varsity Blues.” Laughlin and her husband were arrested in March 2019 after authorities discovered they’d paid a $500,000 bribe to slick the wheels for their daughters, Olivia and Isabella Rose, to be accepted to the University of Southern California as rowing recruits. (Neither were competitive rowers.) Both parents pleaded guilty to the crime and served their full sentences, the longest of which ended in April 2021. During this period, Guthy and Giannulli ended their relationship, but they got back together in August 2019.
During an appearance last year on the notorious Red Table Talk show, Giannulli—who also appeared on Dancing With the Stars this year—said she didn’t originally understand why her parents’ actions had drawn so much attention. “A lot of kids in that bubble, their parents were donating to schools and doing stuff that advantaged,” she said. “It’s not fair and it’s not right, but it was happening. And so, when this first came out, I was like, ‘I don’t really understand what’s wrong with this.’…I didn’t realize at the time that was privilege. I didn’t put those two together. I was like, ‘Well, this is what everybody does, and my parents worked really hard and I don’t understand.’ But that’s not how it should be and unfortunately, that’s how it was, and I’m grateful for this situation to see that big change and that big difference in my own mind.”
